What is an AI receptionist?
By Sam Bigelow — Founder & Principal Strategist. 15 years inside Fortune 500 networking & global manufacturing.
An AI receptionist is software that answers inbound calls and messages, gives basic information, and books appointments automatically — acting like a virtual front desk. It handles the first touch, but on its own it usually stops at answering, without following up, recovering revenue, or running deeper workflows.
The term 'AI receptionist' describes the front-desk job: pick up, answer questions, take a booking. It's a real improvement over voicemail. But the front desk is only the first step of the revenue you're trying to protect.
Where an AI receptionist stops
Answering the call is necessary but not sufficient. The money also leaks in the follow-up that never happens, the quote that goes silent, the no-show nobody recovers, and the review never requested. A receptionist-only tool typically doesn't own those.
Frequently asked
Answering every call instead of losing it to voicemail almost always pays for itself. The bigger return comes from also following up and recovering revenue — which is why many businesses choose a full AI workforce instead of a receptionist-only tool.
